Is it possible to overfeed a toddler?? at bath time the other night, his little belly was so big that he was trying to suck it in to see his penis! (too funny and adorable to watch!) his diaper has been leaking overnight because we can't tighten it enough over his belly - as he digests, there's a gap between diaper and skin and that lets stuff escape. (we have ways around this, so it's not a concern)... since we stopped jarred food, he's been eating large amounts of table food and even sleeps thru most nights (i almost don't dare type that for fear it will stop!!)

i'd like to think he'd stop eating once he was full, but i also think he might be eating more than his belly can comfortably because we're cheering him on when he uses his spoon and because we're his parents and he trusts us. how can i test this - offer 1/4 or 1/3 less food and see what he does??? see if he asks for more or wakes up earlier and hungrier than usual??

or am i just transferring adult thoughts/feelings onto my little boy??

on the other hand, is is developing quite the set of chins!!!!! (i do not think he is overweight by any stretch of the imagination, but i can see the potential if we get him started with bad eating habits.)

he's pooping several times per day - at least twice, often 3 times, and 4 is not unusual. and he's nursing an average of 4 times per day.

Elliot's new word is WOW! i guess i say it a lot to him...

Look over there... WOW! Look at those leaves - WOW, that's cool! That's a big truck - WOW!

So now he points to something, babbles and says WOW!

it's too cute!

October 17, 2007

christ, we must win the worst parent's award for sure.

we had a guy come give us an estimate on repairing our chimney today. i answered the door while Jay was changing Elliot's diaper. he came downstairs, i took Elliot and he and the chimney guy went to the basement to look at the furnace. Elliot and I played in the livingroom for a few minutes, then i had a bite of my sandwich while he wandered into the kitchen.

i had that sudden thought - i should check the gate - no idea why, as i expected Jay to have closed it. nope - wide open and Elliot is poised at the top of the stairs again, but this time he's starting to move forward. again it's a blur. i remember running and grabbing the back of his shirt. there was a loud crash. i fell. somehow, i completely broke the baby gate. bashed my knee quite nicely. but i pulled Elliot back and we sat on the floor and rocked for a bit while i tried to figure out what happened.

Jay spent the next hour in the basement cursing and banging things around while he tried to fix the gate. the chimney guy followed Jay downstairs and didn't shut the gate. Jay forgot to check and so did i. stupid, really.

this makes me really scared for the third time Elliot faces those basement stairs. he's been lucky twice, but both times was pure chance.

October 13, 2007

i got a look in Elliot's mouth this morning. it appears as if his top canines are trying to cut through along with the molars! my poor boy!! the big bulging pointy lump where his canine would be wasn't there a couple of days ago... he's got this new swelling on both sides up top. his molars are really bulging on the top (both sides) and a bit on the bottom right.

hope this happens fast and that he gets a break afterwards - since
his first 2 came in by 4.5 months, then the top 2 bulged and throbbed and wreaked havoc for 2.5 months before popping through at 7 months, then by 9 months he'd gotten 4 more teeth!

October 5, 2007

Elliot was whiney during supper, so after i took him out of his high chair, i put him down and said "go find daddy" while i started cleaning up the mess on the floor.

i don't know why i stopped. maybe he made a noise? maybe i heard him move? but i took 2 steps to the kitchen door to see him poised at the top of the basement stairs, baby gate wide open.

i don't remember crossing the floor. i know i said his name and said "jesus" (not religious at all, just tend to say that when shocked or badly frightened.) i was thinking 'how do i get him with out scaring him or him thinking it's a game and lunging away form me?' i grabbed his arm and dragged him backwards. we sat on the floor next to the cat food while i rocked him and cried and he fussed to get out of my arms.

he was looking back at me. maybe he was thinking "hey mama, lookit me!". maybe he was thinking about turning around. but for some reason, today, he didn't just walk off the top step as if it wasn't there. the basement lights were off. the image of my baby at the top of a dark opening is burned into my mind.

Jay keeps reminding me that there will be many "almosts" in his lifetime. that now i will never, ever forget to close and lock the gate behind me again. (because yes, it was me who forgot). i know he's right, i know Elliot is fine. but all i keep thinking is that i almost lost him. those steps are steep. there's only concrete and metal at the bottom. he's just a baby.
