Holy crap.. we knew Elliot knew some colours and shapes - we could ask him to get the black crayon and he would, or we'd say "Where's the circle?" and he's pick it up... but last night, Jay's dad and stepmom were over and she was asking Elliot "What's this?" to all his crayons and shapes and he said the words for 5 colours and 4 shapes. Wowee, he's just been exploding with words the last couple of days!

Such a little smarty pants, huh! Man, I love this kid!!! We did a word count, and now it's over 35 words, not including all the animal noises and signs he knows. He also has a bunch of compound words - some new, but most of which I somehow forgot about when we were talking about it in the other thread.

It just blows me away how much he knows and is expressing. I'm so proud!!!!! And I'm missing so much of it because I'm at work all the damn time now!!!!

February 18, 2008

Elliot's been waking up at 5:30 again. For the day. For the last 3-4 weeks. Even a 6 weeks ago, he was "sleeping in" until 6:45-7ish.

He wakes up, does a really loud, persistent and very fake cry until we go in. Then he waves and says "hiiiiiiiiiiii!!" Usually, try to soothe him in his crib but that never works - he tries to climb me. So we sit in the rocker, in the dark, and he sometimes doses off again. But whenever I try to put him back in his crib, he's instantly on his feet and the whole thing starts up again. Usually I then nurse him and try rocking him some more, which doesn't work, so I then pass him off to Jay who changes him and they comes downstairs while I crawl back into bed to try to sleep for 30 minutes before getting up for work.

This morning, this all started at 4:45. I rocked him and he dosed off. Put him down again around 5:15. Instant screaming. I went to the bathroom to let him CIO a bit while I got a cloth wipe warm. Jay got up. I asked him to warm a bottle of milk while I nursed him (turns out he didn't have a poopy diaper, so we put off changing him.) Elliot downed the bottle (this is new - we never do a bottle in the mornings) and I rocked him some more. He was sleepy but awake, and I put him down anyway around 5:45. Made it back to bed and he started yelling. Jay got up and took a turn. He was back in bed by 6. Elliot was yelling again by 6:05, and so we decided that Jay would change him into a daytime diaper and I'd take him downstairs for breakfast.

While we were discussing this and Elliot was yelling, our boarder got up to start his day, so Jay had to wait for the bathroom to be free so he could get warm water for the change, etc. Elliot was surprisingly quiet, despite door openings and closings and then noises in the kitchen while M got his breakfast ready. 6:30, Elliot is still quiet so we all go back to sleep.

It's 8 and Elliot is still asleep. I don't know what freak of nature or stroke of luck made it happen, but I'm very glad it did. I guess he took a second to rest his eyes and passed out. He wouldn't sleep until 8:30 last night, so I know he is exhausted.

It doesn't seem to matter what time he goes to bed at night. We've tried everything between 7-8:30 and he still wakes up at 5:30. I think our option right now is to check on him once at 5:30 and then leave and hope he sorts himself out. I suppose I could continue giving him a bottle, in case he's hungry, which is what I think part of the problem is. Even though he eats a ton during the day and has a good supper.

When he's up this early, he needs 2 naps during the day, but then when he has those 2 naps, he doesn't want to sleep at night. Without that second nap, he's a cranky, horrible creature that no one wants to be around.

My trifecta: I'm 16 weeks prego, nursing a 16 month old who has 16 teeth fully through. This can't be good!

Seriously, my nips are killing me! It hurts to nurse now.

February 1, 2008

Jay is out of work. This makes him very cranky as the bills are piling up and he HATES to be in debt. And he hates the uncertainty. And he does not handle well under stress.

I'm working pretty much full time hours from 2 jobs. This week, I'll log 34 hours from Mon-Sat. This means Jay is home with Elliot. He is not yet totally cut out for the full time dad thing. He's cranky. Impatient with Elliot. Cranky at me. I tell him what my hours are for the next day and he just sighs, thinking about all the stuff (freelance work and creative Jay-time stuff) he won't get to do.

Oh, and did I mention how hugely opposed he is to daycare???

Bottom line, he's out of work, I'm making a bit of money and he needs to suck it up. I did this for 16 freaking months - 2 of which were on my own, while I was in school. I just can't point that out because he gets super defensive and the last thing we need is to be fighting about this. It's a crappy situation all around and I don't know how to make it better.

If Jay finds work (he's looking) then that means I will have to quit my jobs and lose out on that income as well as any maternity benefits for this baby. (I need to log 600 hours between now and babytime to get EI.) OR that means we'll need to find childcare. Which he doesn't want to do.

As much as I wanted to be a stay-at-home-mom, I am enjoying working. If all I had to deal with was the exhaustion from working 30 hour weeks, then I'd be fine. But I can't deal with my husband on top of it. We're reaching the point where I don't want to leave him with Elliot. Not that I feel he would hurt or neglect him at all, but his own internal anger and impatience cannot be a positive thing for Elliot to be exposed to.

I'm sure most of what Jay expresses is just venting, but still... I can't deal with it without venting myself, and I don't feel I can vent to him. *sigh*

Elliot LOVES getting dizzy. If I turn the radio on, he starts spinning. Yesterday, he spun himself right into the corner or the cupboards, split the skin on his forehead and had one whopper of a goose egg. Tonight, he spun himself down into a sitting position, but he was still dizzy so he fell backwards and clonked his head on the ceramic floor. Then while Jay was soothing him (I had onion hands), Elliot twisted out of his grasp and clonked the front of his head on the floor as well.

I'm not going to be able to listen to the radio anymore! It doesn't even have to be music - he'll spin to the news, the crazy child!!!
