March 29, 2008

Thursday afternoon, Elliot was in a really foul mood. I came home from work early because Jay was sick with a migraine and Elliot was a raving lunatic. He nursed for a good 15 minutes (unusually long for him) around 2pm and sort of calmed down. We nursed again, briefly, before bed Thursday night.

We *may* have had our final nursing session yesterday morning, but I don't actually remember doing it. I worked last night, so Jay gave him a bottle and put him to bed. He didn't ask for milk this morning, so off to work I went. After his bath tonight, Jay read him a story like always. Then he high-tailed it into his room, like always. But then as we sat down in the rocking chair, he grabbed his soother out of my hand, plunked it in his mouth and we just rocked and sang songs. He didn't ask and I didn't offer milk. I haven't heard him for about 20 minutes and I think he actually went to sleep...

I guess it's finally time. I'll give it if he asks, but I think we might have just weaned!

March 24, 2008

I need to get this down somewhere so I can see it. I need to go over this with my doula. It's starting to really make me panic and I'm worried that if I go into labour still afraid, things will not go as planned and I'll end up with a section.

I'm not afraid of the labour. Or the delivery. Or the pain. Or anything like that. I'm afraid of the recovery. Of the immediate aftermath. I had a 3rd degree tear with Elliot. I have a thick ridge of scar tissue that my dr says has properly healed, but it still hurts. (I also still have a hemi, which is only getting worse as this pregnancy progresses.) I'm scared of tearing again - not the tearing, but the healing from it. I bled for 7 weeks pp last time, until I went for my check up and it was discovered that I had retained tissue. And needed a d&c. That still terrifies me. While still in the hospital, I passed a gigantic jellyfish clot. It was easily as big as my fist, probably bigger. The thought of doing that again scares me. The nurses were concerned, but my dr said it was just a clot when she examined it. The thought of all the bleeding that happens afterwards is really creeping me out.

There. I think I said it all.

How can I deal with this? Rationally, I know that the bleeding and tearing is a normal part of the aftermath. I'm not afraid of 'normal'. I've already mentioned to my dr (well, reminded her, anyway) about the d&c. I will be more vocal about making sure they check my placenta when it's expelled. I will even ask for an ultrasound before I leave the hospital. But still, even having those plans in place, I'm feeling stressed out enough that I can just imagine my body shutting down and stalling labour if I'm not careful.

March 23, 2008

Elliot's had his hands jammed in his mouth for weeks now. I keep checking for bumps or swellings or any other sign that the 2 year molars are on their way, but nothing. I imagine there's a lot of stirring happening beneath the surface, but still...

I started thinking today that maybe he is having problems with his teeth. Cavities, maybe? It would explain the odd grumpiness over the last 2 weeks. Medicine does make him feel better, which is good. And which makes me believe it's molars, not decay... but other than taking him to the dentist or waiting to see if bumps appear in his gums, how would I know??

It's always been a struggle to brush his teeth. When we took him to the dentist back in January, he commented on how deep the grooves in Elliot's molars were and said we'd have to take extra care when brushing them.

He doesn't eat sugar or very much juice (none lately, in fact) and rarely has bottles - but he does eat lots of yogurt with sugar in it. And he likes raisins, which I know suck for teeth. We do brush his teeth once (sometimes twice) per day and wipe out his mouth after most meals.

I remember my brother had his first dentist appointment around 2-2.5 years old and had an insane amount of caviites, and several cousins have all had to have their teeth capped at very young ages due to enamel problems. Does this stuff run in the family?

March 20, 2008

So, the conversation lately has been going like this:

Me: Who am I?
Elliot: Mama!!!!!
Me: Who's that?
Elliot: Daddy!!!
Me: Who are you?
Elliot: Boy!
Me: Well, your name is ELLIOT. You are a boy.
Elliot: NO! BOY!

March 16, 2008

My back is killing me! And I've been having BH contractions all day (nothing regular, so I'm not worried, but that combined with the sore back is making me cranky and achy.)

Saw my chiro a week ago and she said I was a mess. And said I should come back in 1-2 weeks at the most. So I booked an appointment for 2 weeks, as that's what matched my schedule best. But now I wish I'd booked it for tomorrow.

I get bad sciatica when pregnant. My pelvis has a tendency to rotate when I'm not pregnant, so it's just a joy when there's this extra growth pulling on it.

I've been sleeping with a snoogle pillow at night which is heavenly for my upper back and belly, but does nothing for my low back and knees. Ugh. Can't find a good compromise! A regular pillow between my knees and under my head is only slightly better for my low back, but then everything else hurts!!!

Guess I'll be sitting on the exercise ball and soaking in the tub a lot over the next few days.

Plus, Elliot (aka Octobaby) decided to get creative and finger-paint with his own shit during a diaper change for the first time ever. And that was in the 30 minutes I took to run out to the mall to buy some maternity tights so Jay got to deal with it (YAY!) But now Jay is so cranky he doesn't even want to look at Elliot, so I just took him for a walk and am trying to soothe my back and entertain him while Jay stews (and works) in the basement.

Oh yes, and I did ALL the dishes, cleaned out the fridge, did 2 loads of laundry (including a load of diapers that went through twice), swept the downstairs and had a play date with a sweet little girl that Elliot kept hitting. I'm done for the day, ok?! Please???

Oops, didn't mean for this to turn into a rant, just a vent about my sore back!!!

March 10, 2008

Ugh.

Back-story: since about January, Elliot's poops have become mushier and mushier (impossible to scrape off a CD) and the odour has gotten very bad - this morning, Jay described it as if Elliot had eaten a skunk. Tonight's smelled very sour.

He has 2-3 of these mushy things per day. Otherwise, he seems to be very happy and not in pain. He does have some eczema spots, but they started before this. But, they aren't budging. They improved, but did worsen in January. But the air got colder and dryer then, too. I've switched laundry detergents.

In December, we went from 4-5 nursing sessions per day to about 2. In January, I went back to work and his consumption of regular milk skyrocketed. The poops got mushy then, and I switched him to Lacteeze milk, which I drink due to lactose intolerance, to see if it would help. No change - worse, if anything.

My plan right now is to gradually switch him over to goats milk and yogurt and cut back on the cheese (he gobbles up dairy products - very much like his mama here!!)

Maybe my colostrum is coming in and that's contributing. We're still nursing about twice per day, but I know my supply is drastically lower - it's mainly for comfort than anything. He still asks to nurse and I'm not ready to fully wean, but if it's my milk causing the problem, then I need to.

He's not overly gassy and the poops don't appear to be mucousy which I know are big signs of dairy issues. They don't hurt him coming out - except his little bum is getting a bit ready due to the frequency and ability for it to smear all over, I guess. Jay is blaming it on juice, which Elliot does get, but it's always very watered down and he drinks maybe 2 oz of the mixture all day. In any case, we're stopping the juice.

Ugh. I'm asking my dr for a referral to an allergist for myself at my appointment on Wed and I'll be asking about Elliot then, too.
