Scared more than a few years off my life!

Elliot climbed up on a chair and stood on it, even though he knows he's supposed to sit down (something he never does, but that's another rant) . He was in a playful mood and was half dancing half twitching with excitement because he knew he wasn't supposed to be there. I was telling him to be careful as I walked towards him (having just pulled him down from the chair at the opposite end of the table) and he pitched forward clean off the edge. Landed chest then fore-head first on the hardwood floor and his body snapped around and he was laying on his back on the floor.

He started crying and I was scared to move him because of how his back had arched around, but I needed to hold him so I soothed him while Jay tried to soothe me. He wanted to nurse and while he nursed, Jay checked his body over for bumps or broken bits. One finger looked like it got bent backwards, but nothing seems broken and he didn't complain. I checked his spine and everything is intact with no tender spots. He has no lumps or bruises yet that we can see.

It was almost nap time and I was hesitant to let him sleep, but figured he needed it. So he slept for 2 hours and is now eating lunch. Seems fine!

But wow, so scary. I've lost count of how many times this child has scared me in his tiny life!

January 15, 2008

Elliot woke yesterday with a 100.2 temperature. Four hours later, it was 100.5. An hour later it was 101.7 He was a bit clingy, but otherwise seems happy and in great spirits, just very warm.

He's getting over a cold and still has a nasty cough, so my worry is that it's turning into an ear infection... but that would spike a fever, rather than this slow burn, right??? And he'd be in pain and unhappy; not the cheery little thing that's doing laps around the house on his little red car, right???

Well, the fever broke yesterday and there's still no sign of the roseola rash, if that's even what it was. His cough is sounding terrible and it's keeping everyone up at night. I was at my dr's office today and was able to book him in with his dr. He's got the all clear for an ear infection or respiratory infections. His dr thinks he might have a mild form of juvenile asthma (that he should outgrow) which makes recovery from colds longer. (His cough ALWAYS drags on for 3-4 weeks after he has a cold, meaning that his colds last a total of 5-6 weeks.) So we have a prescription for a puffer and face mask to give him only when he has a cold to help him sleep/breath better. We pick it up tomorrow - so we'll see how it goes!

He also got the first part of the flu shot today. We all figured since he's more susceptible to respiratory problems that having the shot might be beneficial in the long run.

We talked about a possible milk sensitivity. The last few days, he's really been guzzling whole milk, and his little belly is now swollen all the time and his poops are super mushy and smelly. Very different for him. So we're switching him to Lacteeze milk, which I drink anyway, to see if it helps any. If there's no change in 2 weeks, we'll try soy or goat's milk.

Baby Boo was fluttering all around with a heart reat of 148. I've gained back 2 lbs of the 10 I lost in the first trimester. I have also developed a goiter - lovely, huh?! I have to go for blood work to check my thyroid and she's also booking me in for a u/s of my thyroid to check it out. It's probably normal pregnancy stuff, but it could be symptoms of a larger problem, resulting in me needing supplements or surgery.

A goiter resembles, in very plain terms an Adam's apple, but on a woman. Mine isn't very big, but I can see it. It's a swelling of my throat (of my thyroid, actually). It feels a bit like I'm constantly wearing a turtleneck.

It's common in pregnancy for the thyroid to enlarge due to the hormone (HCG) levels. But, the predisposition to enlarge due to normal prego stuff can be because of an underlying issue, which they will check me out for.

I go for my maternal serum testing in mid-February and will have the 20 week u/s (no gender determinations or pictures) in early March.

Why is it that I can get up with Elliot at 5:30, change him, nurse him, play with him, give him breakfast, and get him dressed, all before Jay wakes up, then hang out with him for 3 hours while Jay goes to an appointment and gets some errands done (granted, E did have a 1.5 hr nap in there)... then go out myself for a mere 3.5 hours with friends once Jay comes home, only to have him get all pissy with me when I'm *finally* home again because "You were gone a long time. I have work to do."

Gah!!!

Yes, I understand that it's now 4pm and you haven't had a chance to work on your stuff yet today and I got to sit around for most of the morning on my computer. But come on...

January 9, 2008

We were watching one of his favourite shows the other morning (Poko). Elliot was extremely overtired, but wasn't ready for a nap yet.

In this episode, Poko and Bibi are playing with a pop-up book with a huge castle tower in it. Poko starts horsing around and breaks off the top of the tower. Bibi looks very upset. Poko tries a few different ways to fix it, but no luck.

Elliot got up out of his chair and came running over to me, very upset. He put his head on my lap and I ended up having to pick him up and rock him to calm him down. In the show, when the characters are upset, something they do to help is grab their stuffies and hug them. So we got one of Elliot's bears and hugged it with them. Then Poko said he was sorry and Bibi was happy again. Then Elliot was ok again, too.

I just figured it was because he was tired, but a couple days later, I put on the show for him while I did a few dishes. I forgot it was that episode. Sure enough, he came running out to the kitchen at the same spot, still very upset.

He's also started to get very upset when we read Humpty Dumpty. The book we have has an extra page at the back. There's no text, but it shows Humpty looking very happy and with a bandage on his head. Elliot gets upset when we say "...couldn't put Humpty together again." Even though we are very cheery about saying something like "So the butterflies gave him a bandage and he's happy again!"...

Me thinks we're in trouble if/when he ever sees Bambi or Old Yeller!

January 6, 2008

Up until about a month ago, Elliot would go to bed around 7, sleep until 4/5, nurse, sometimes then play for an hour on his own in his crib, then sleep until 7/8 and be up for the day.

He was also taking 3 hours naps once a day.

Now, he's waking up at 5:30 for the day, no matter what time he goes to bed at night. (We've tried a variety of times between 7-8:30). He's also gone back to 2 short (1-1.5 hr) naps per day.

I hate this schedule!! Jay keeps saying that sleep begets sleep and so if we just let him sleep as much as he wants during the day (ie, not waking him up if his naps goes past 5pm), he'll eventually things will change. (Yeah, Jay isn't the one getting up at 5:30 every day. It's me, 95% of the time.)

I think that we need to force/distract him into having a later and later nap in the hopes that it will turn back into a long nap and only 1 nap. And continue putting him to bed at 7.

Another problem to this is that sometimes I think just letting him cry would help, instead of running to check on him. (I usually do let him wait a couple of minutes.) But, the problem with this is that we now have a paying boarder who stays in the room next to Elliot and I feel crappy about him paying to be living here (it's temporary) and being woken up at odd hours.

Yesterday, Elliot woke at 5:30, napped from 10-11:30 and again from 4-5 (when I woke him) and then fell asleep at 8. he was up for an hour at 2, crying - he wanted me to hold him and kept trying to climb out of his crib while crying, so I gave in and rocked him. Then he was up for the day at 5:30.

Ugh!!!!!!!!! I'm exhausted and hate having to go to bed when he does so I can cope with his wake ups. Jay doesn't come to bed until 1, (for a variety of reasons, the main on being he's out of work right now and is working on freelance stuff) so I feel like a total jerk waking him to go tend to Elliot in the night.

January 5, 2008

Elliot fell this morning. He was crying, but not a scream or anything to indicate he was badly hurt, but when I picked him up and rubbed the back of his head where he landed, my hand came away all sticky with blood.

I froze and didn't know what to do. It was about 6:30 in the morning. Jay was asleep. I didn't know if I should rush him upstairs and tend to him up there or scream for Jay to come help or what. I finally grabbed a facecloth, got it cold and put it on his head to wipe away what I could before I looked at it. It was really a very small cut once I got to see it, so I cleaned him up (the cloth on his head pissed him off more than the fall!) and watched him for signs of pain/disorientation/etc. And I had to clean the floor, as there were blood drops where he landed, too!

He was fine. But boy, I was terrified!!!

He was squeezing himself between the table and the radiator and must have tripped. He plays behind there all the time - it's a fun little obstacle course that he loves and until today, appeared safe. There's nothing sharp coming out of the radiator, so I'm confused as to what he hit his head on, but no matter, he's ok.

Whew!

January 2-3, 2008

Elliot's front upper tooth has a tiny sheared off bit, at the corner. It's barely noticeable, but it is there - and it's sharp. I only discovered it because I was putting cream on his split upper lip and he was upside down in my lap.

It either happened last night when he had a bite of my nectarine but hit the pit - there was a loud crunch and he started to cry (most likely culprit) or tonight when he tripped over my boots and landed on his face on the floor - that's what we think caused the split lip (no blood, however). He didn't cry that time, though.

Elliot's so rough-and-tumble that I'm actually surprised it took this long for him to damage himself this way... but still, my poor baby!!!

Went to the dentist this morning. I'm so proud of my little boy! Jay and I both went with him, and he sat in the BIG chair all by himself. The dentist checked his teeth with his hands at first, then brought out a mirror to make sure he hadn't fractured up the back of the tooth. The tooth is fine and healthy, other than the bit of jaggedness. Then he used the (noisy!) file to smooth it out. And he checked his other teeth and gave us tips on brushing. He wasn't concerned about the pits - just told us to keep them clean as possible. We have another appointment in 6 months for his first cleaning and fluoride, and they'll check that tooth again.

The dentist would say "daddy's turn... mommy's turn... Elliot's turn." with each piece of equipment to get Elliot comfortable. Elliot opened up his mouth for him, and didn't bite or fuss or cry! The only time he was a bit alarmed was when the dentist put the chair down. But Elliot got over that in a blink. SO proud of him!!
